You don't have to wait if you're ready now to deploy Teams to the users in your organization. We also have the steps you can take to exclude Teams from new or existing installations of Microsoft Apps if your organization isn't ready to deploy Teams. Instead, you need to install Teams by using the separate MSI-based installer. The date when Teams starts being installed with new installations of Microsoft Apps depends on which update channel you're using.
The following table shows the schedule. Or, as an alternative, you can let Teams be installed, but use Group Policy to prevent Teams from automatically starting when the user signs in to the device. If you want to use the Office Deployment Tool , you can use the ExcludeApp element in your configuration. Instead of using a text editor to create your configuration.

If you're letting your users install Microsoft Apps for themselves from the Office portal, you can't exclude Teams from being included as part of the installation, unless you use Group Policy. Whether Teams gets added to an existing installation of Microsoft Apps is determined by what version is installed, what version you're updating to, and some other factors. Version that was released in Current Channel in July is the first version that started including Teams as part of the update process.
But not all devices updating to Version or later have received Teams as part of the update process because the rollout has been a gradual process over several months.
So if you've updated a device to the latest version of Microsoft Apps, but Teams hasn't been installed, that is probably expected and not necessarily an error.
It's likely a future update will install Teams. We don't have any change log information yet for version 1. Sometimes publishers take a little while to make this information available, so please check back in a few days to see if it has been updated. Up to now, if you had the bit version of Microsoft Apps installed on a device and you wanted to change to the bit version, you needed to uninstall the existing bit version and then install the bit version.
It also required that you account for all the other deployment settings configured for that device, such as the update path and the installed languages, so that those settings would be included when you did the bit installation. But now, to make it easier to change from a bit to a bit installation of Microsoft Apps, the Office Deployment Tool and its configuration. If the MigrateArch attribute is set to True, then your installation of Microsoft Apps will be changed to the architecture sometimes referred to as the bitness that is specified in the OfficeClientEdition attribute.
With MigrateArch, you don't have to account for all the installed products and languages or other deployment settings. The migration process will preserve those during the migration process.
But, if you want to make any changes to the installed products and languages, or other deployment settings, you can do that as part of the migration process by explicitly specifying those settings in your configuration. For more information, see Sample configuration. Before starting the migration process to a different bitness, you must have Version or later installed on the device that you want to change the bitness of.
Migration is allowed to the same version, or to any later version, but you must have at least Version installed on the device before beginning the migration process.
